Daniel D. Tompkins, a native of New York City, was trained at the U.S. Military Academy. He was cited for gallantry and meritorious conduct in the Seminole War (1836). Tompkins was a quartermaster general stationed in New Orleans during the Mexican War and was cited for meritorious conduct particularly in the performance of his duties in the prosecution of the war with Mexico.
